The only thing stopping the human population from an event of mass extinction is the federal, state, and other international governments. Climate change is a current, and very real threat, in fact, it is even considered a national security threat to Pentagon officials. Global temperatures, sea levels, and CO2 levels are all rising at an exponential rate. If action isn t taken by such levels of government, planet earth is destined for doom. The question, however, is if the government should be responsible for regulating the environment, and then that sparks the question of which level of government should regulate the environment. Although I agree that the federal government has the upperhand in influencing states to enact laws upon specific environmental policies, and while power not granted to the government belongs to the state and people, I still insist that environmental regulations should be set in the hands of both state and federal government in order to assure adequate enviro nmental protection over localized areas upon which the U.S. government has limited jurisdiction. War, as defined by the Merriam Webster is â€Å"a state or period of usually open and declared fighting between states or nations.† War, can also be viewed with romantic ideals where heroes and legends are born. Even the most intelligent of us hold some rather naà ¯ve notions of war. Upon reading Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five, intelligent readers have been divested of any romantic notions regarding war they may have harboured. In Slaughterhouse Five the reader is encouraged to show contempt for war and to abandon all hopes of thinking war as a place where deeds of heroism are and bravery are performed. At this point, over 135,000 civilians are killed on an undefended city as a reminder to the Germans to surrender to the Allied forces. The random killing of over 135,000 civilians just to make sure the enemy surrenders is nearly the same as taking beating an opposing team in a sport 10-0 and scoring one more just to make sure they lose. The bombing is senseless and Dresden had no reason to be bombed, other than the fact that it was a German city. The bombing provokes the reader to be outraged at the tactics that man uses just to make sure his opponent will lose. Even the structure of the book is written in a way that provokes the reader. The book is written rather haphazardly for a reason. The Story Of An Hour Analysis Essay The Story of an Hour is a short essay that describes what Mrs. Mallard goesthrough when she finds out her husband has been killed in a train accident. Atfirst she is extremely sad but when she looks out the window it becomes apparentto her that she is free. Mrs. Mallard is overwhelmed with the thought that herbody and soul are now free. Despite the loss of Mr. Mallard she is overcome withhappiness and feels rejuvenated with the prospect of being free in years tocome. In a sense she feels like a bird that has just been let out of its cageafter years of captivity. After a while she heads back down stairs to talk toRichards, the man that brought her the news of her husbands death. As soon asshe gets to the bottom of the stairs Mr. Mallard walks in looking a littletravel stained. The shock of seeing her husband alive causes her to have a heartattack and die. Mrs. Mallard plays a character that has to deal with veryserious emotions. Her emotional state goes from one end of the spectrum to theother in only an hour. It seems that she dies because of the joy of seeing herhusband alive. I think she dies because of an entirely different reason. She hada history of heart problems but those could be attributed to the fact that shewas unhappy and felt like she was in captivity. When Mrs. Mallard realized thatshe was free it seemed that an elixir ran through her body and made her feelbrand new and wonderful. I believe that if her husband had really died she wouldhave lived many more years. Upon finding out that her husband was indeed aliveshe died. The doctor said that it was over joy that caused her heart to fail. The way Mrs. Mallards character had acted up until this point leads us inanother direction. Her death was almost like a suicide. When Mr. Mallard showedup she then knew that she would be returned to captivity. She chose death overleaving the happiness that she had so briefly enjoyed.
